Pass, dribble and overlap in a line of four cones
Wave warm-up with four lines 10 m apart: the outside players pass to the inside players, who dribble diagonally outwards while the passer overlaps around the outside and receives on the run. The group advances up the pitch keeping its spacing.
Step 1Pase de los exteriores
1 / 3
El 1 y el 4 pasan a la vez al 2 y al 3, que se ofrecen en movimiento.
Objective
Correctly weighted pass to feet or into space, diagonal dribbling with tempo and an early, full-speed overlapping run, with communication between the two players.
Organisation
Four discs in a line along a touchline, 10 m apart, in one half. Players form lines behind each disc; those at the two outside discs start with a ball. With 8-12 players, two or three per line.
Development
- 1The outside players (1 and 4) pass at the same time to the inside players (2 and 3), who have offered on the move.
- 2Players 2 and 3 dribble with tempo diagonally towards the outside where the ball came from, advancing up the pitch.
- 3As soon as they have passed, 1 and 4 sprint and overlap around the outside of their teammate, circling him and filling the space left by the dribble.
- 4Players 2 and 3 pass into the space of the overlapping runner, who receives on the run; roles now swap, the receiver dribbles while the passer overlaps.
- 5Each pair continues to the far end of the pitch keeping the 10 m spacing; then the next four start from the lines.
- 6Jog back around the outside and repeat on the other side to work the dribble and the pass with the other foot.
Coaching points4
- Pass to feet or into space with the right weight: the overlapping runner must never slow down.
- Overlap early and accelerating: the run must get past the teammate before he needs to pass.
- Dribble diagonally outwards with the head up to see the arriving teammate.
- Communication: the overlapping player calls as he starts the run.
Common mistakes3
- Overlapping inside the dribbler instead of around the outside.
- Dribbling in a straight line without opening space for the overlap.
- A through pass too long that forces an unnecessary sprint.
Variations3
- Finish each wave with a cross from the flank and a teammate's finish.
- Dribble inside and overlap outside to reproduce the winger and full-back situation.
- Limit the dribbler to three touches before passing.
Progressions2
- Add a passive defender who shifts towards the ball to force the choice between dribbling on or passing to the overlap.
- Increase the spacing to 15 m for longer passes and more demanding overlaps.
Regressions2
- 6-8 m spacing and walk through the sequence until the overlap path is clear.
- Pass and dribble only, without the overlap, with the youngest players.
Tips
- Demonstrate the exact overlap path with two players before starting.
- Use the touchline as a reference so the pairs never cross.
