Objective

Improve the speed and accuracy of two-touch circulation, continuous support movement and the coordination of the press between the two defenders.

Organisation

8x8 m square marked with four cones. Four possession players on the sides of the square and two defenders in bibs in the middle. One ball in play and several spares next to the square. With 8 players, two wait outside and come in at each change.

Development

  1. 1The four possession players circulate the ball with a maximum of two touches; they may move along their side of the square to offer a passing line.
  2. 2The two defenders press as a pair: one jumps to the ball while the other closes the inside passing line.
  3. 3If a defender touches the ball or it leaves the square, the possession player who made the mistake goes into the middle and the defender who has been there longest comes out.
  4. 4Count consecutive passes; every 10 passes in a row is a point for the possession players and every pass between the two defenders counts double.
  5. 5Sets of 3 minutes with a mandatory change of both defenders if they fail to win the ball.

Coaching points4

  • Receive with the foot furthest from the defender and open up towards the free side.
  • Possession players move along their side to open the passing line before the ball arrives.
  • Defenders: the first presses on a curve to block one side and the second reads the remaining passing line.
  • Firm ground passes; the pass between the two defenders is the priority target.

Common mistakes3

  • Receiving with the foot nearest the defender and having no way out.
  • Both defenders jumping to the ball and leaving the inside pass open.
  • Possession players standing on the corner instead of offering along the side of the square.

Variations3

  • One touch mandatory for the possession players.
  • Unlimited touches, but a pass through the middle between the defenders is worth three points.
  • The player who loses the ball goes into the middle without anyone coming out: 3v3 rondo for 10 seconds.

Progressions2

  • Reduce the square to 6x6 m to increase time pressure.
  • Add a third defender to play 4v3.

Regressions2

  • Enlarge the square to 10x10 m and allow three touches.
  • Play 5v2 with a fifth possession player inside who can receive.

Tips

  • Start the rondo with a pass from the coach outside the square to avoid slow starts.
  • Change the pair of defenders every 45 seconds if they do not win the ball, to keep intensity high.
