Objective

Improve the directional first touch with the far foot so players link receiving and passing to the next station with a minimum of touches.

Organisation

12x12 m square marked with four cones. One player on each corner, or two per corner with 8 players. Start with one ball and add a second once the group masters the pattern.

Development

  1. 1Player 1 plays a firm ground pass to player 2 along the side of the square.
  2. 2Player 2 receives with the far foot and directs the first touch towards the next teammate, placing the ball off the cone line and inside the square.
  3. 3With the second touch, 2 passes to player 3 and so on until the ball has gone round the square.
  4. 4After each lap, reverse the direction to work the other side of the body.
  5. 5Once the group controls the rhythm, introduce a second ball on the opposite corner and restrict players to two touches.

Coaching points4

  • Receive side-on with a half-open body to see both the ball and the next station.
  • The first touch moves away from the cone, into the square, so players are not stuck on the line.
  • Control with the far foot and pass with the inside of the opposite foot.
  • Keep the ball moving: the touch does not stop the ball, it redirects it.

Common mistakes3

  • Stopping the ball with the sole and losing the timing of the next action.
  • Receiving with the back to the next station and having to turn with the ball.
  • Over-hit passes that make a clean first touch impossible.

Variations3

  • Perform the pattern with the weaker foot for two laps.
  • The passer follows the pass and takes the receiver's corner to add movement.
  • Chipped or waist-high passes to work thigh and chest control.

Progressions1

  • Add a defender in the middle who can steal the ball if the first touch is poor.

Regressions2

  • Allow three touches and shrink the square to 8x8 m.
  • Work only the receiving action: the player controls and returns the ball to the same passer.

Tips

  • Split into two squares with more than 8 players to keep participation high.
  • Count error-free laps out loud to give the group a concrete target.
