Hurdle line, front catch and double collapse dive
Five or six mini hurdles in a line: the keeper clears them with the called pattern, gets set and chains a front catch, a collapse dive to the right and another to the left from the coach's serves.
Step 1Vallas
1 / 3
El portero supera las vallas con el patrón indicado y fija los pies en posición base.
Objective
Link footwork coordination with three consecutive saves, demanding a set position before every ball and a fast recovery between dives.
Organisation
Five or six mini hurdles 1 m apart in a straight line pointing towards the goal. Two discs mark the set position at the end of the hurdles. Coach with balls 5 m beyond the last hurdle.
Development
- 1On command, the keeper clears the hurdles with the pattern the coach calls: single-leg steps, single-leg hops, two-footed jumps or lateral in-and-out.
- 2Coming off the last hurdle they set their feet between the discs and take the ready position: hands up, knees slightly bent.
- 3The coach volleys a ball into the hands for a front catch; the keeper returns it.
- 4The coach rolls a ball to the keeper's right; the keeper collapse-dives and secures it.
- 5They get up, return the ball and the coach rolls to the left for the dive on the other side.
- 6Walk back to the start; 4-6 reps with different patterns. Change the order of the dives every set.
Coaching points4
- Speed and quality over the hurdles: short steps, no crossing of the feet, on the balls of the feet.
- Hips pointing at the ball at all times, including between dives.
- Set position fixed before every serve: never receive on the move.
- Get up with the legs, not the hands, to be in time for the second dive.
Common mistakes3
- Finishing the hurdles upright and receiving the first ball with low hands.
- Falling backwards on the collapse dives instead of attacking the ball forwards.
- Staying on the ground after the first dive and arriving late for the second.
Variations3
- Start with standing catches only until the hurdle pattern is fluent.
- Change ball heights: ground, mid-body or flighted.
- Coach strikes a stationary ball instead of rolling by hand.
Progressions2
- Faster balls further from the body to demand a longer dive.
- Shorten the pause between the front catch and the dives.
Regressions2
- Three hurdles and one ball per run.
- Replace the dives with ground balls into the hands from the set position.
Tips
- Change the hurdle pattern every rep so the coordination never becomes automatic.
- Coach has the ball in hand before the keeper leaves the last hurdle.
