W-catch handling in pairs: kneeling to standing

Objective

Groove the hand shape (W for high balls, M for chest-height balls) and the role of the elbows as shock absorbers before any footwork is added.

Organisation

Pairs of keepers 3-4 m apart, one ball per pair. Two cones mark each keeper's spot. The server throws by hand; the receiver starts on their knees with hands out in front of the body.

Development

  1. 1The receiving keeper kneels, elbows away from the body, hands out in front with thumbs pointing up.
  2. 2The server throws balls by hand above waist height: chest height (M grip, fingers pointing down) and above the head (W grip, thumbs almost touching but not quite).
  3. 3The receiver catches, secures the ball into the chest and returns it by hand. Sets of 10 serves, then swap roles.
  4. 4Progression: the receiver stands in the set position and repeats the sets.
  5. 5Final phase: the receiver stands side-on to the server, turns into the set position on the call and catches a ball that is already in flight.

Coaching points4

  • Hands away from the body and elbows bent: they absorb the impact.
  • Hands not too wide and thumbs up so that either the W or the M grip can be selected by height.
  • In the W the thumbs almost touch behind the ball; in the M the fingers point down and are spread.
  • Head still and eyes on the ball until it reaches the hands.

Common mistakes3

  • Hard hands held tight to the chest: the ball spills.
  • Thumbs apart in the W, letting the ball through the hands.
  • Looking at the partner instead of the ball while catching.

Variations3

  • Server mixes chest-height and above-head serves without warning.
  • Serve with a bounce first to demand reading of the trajectory.
  • Return the ball with an accurate throw into the partner's hands.

Progressions2

  • Harder throws from 5-6 m.
  • Add a short lateral shuffle before every catch.

Regressions2

  • Soft or size-3 ball for the youngest keepers.
  • Chest-height balls only until the M grip is secure.

Tips

  • Correct the hand shape by showing the W with the coach's own hands.
  • Count clean catches: the ball must not rebound off the chest.
