Short corner 2v1 with deep overlap (Atlanta United)
Rehearsed short-corner routine from Atlanta United: short pass to pin the defender who steps out, the central players spin to the back post and a late third attacker overlaps to cross from the byline with a 2v1 advantage.
El 2 pide el corto; el defensor sale y se crea el 2v1 en banda.
Objective
Create a numerical overload on the flank from the corner and reach a byline cross with the finishers attacking the back post on the move.
Organisation
Goal with keeper and balls at the corner flag. Attack: taker (1), short receiver (2) 5-6 m from the flag, two finishers in the six-yard box (5 and 6), four players on the penalty spot (3, 4, 7, 8) and one attacker arriving late from outside the box for the overlap (9). Defence: keeper, one defender stepping out to the short corner (d1) and 4-5 zonal markers; then a full defence. 6-8 repetitions per side.
Development
- 1The 2 peels away from the flag and asks for the short pass; the taker (1) plays a firm ground pass and stays as support.
- 2The short-zone defender (d1) steps out to press the 2: a 2v1 between 2 and 1 has been created.
- 3At that moment the four players on the penalty spot spin towards the back post, dragging defenders and emptying the near-post area.
- 4The 9 arrives late from outside the box and overlaps around the outside of the 2 to the byline, exploiting the 2v1 (the defender cannot cover both the 2 and the 9).
- 5The 2 slides the ball down the line for the 9, who drives a cross from the byline to the back post.
- 6The four from the penalty spot finish on the move; the 5 and 6 cover the near post and the rebound.
- 7If the defence sends two players to the short corner (2v2), the taker reverts to the conventional long delivery: no risk of losing the ball.
Coaching points4
- Play the short corner while the defender is far away: force him to choose between the 2 and the 9.
- The overlap starts the moment the ball travels to the 2, never earlier: the timing is the routine.
- Finishers spin together to the back post to drag the defence, then attack the cross on the move.
- Driven cross, low or waist high: the keeper cannot come for a ball between him and the defender.
Common mistakes3
- Overlapping too early, ending up offside or arriving before the ball.
- Slow short pass that lets the defender close the 2v1 without having to decide.
- Finishers standing still at the back post instead of attacking on the move.
Variations3
- Quick one-two between 1 and 2 before the pass to the overlap to pin the defender further.
- The 9 cuts inside and strikes at the near post if the defender closes the byline.
- Double step-over on the ball before the short pass.
Progressions2
- Full defence with two free players able to step out: choose between short and long.
- Link with a 3-second defensive transition after a clearance.
Regressions2
- No defender in the short zone: only coordinate the timing of overlap and cross.
- Reduce to two finishers on the penalty spot for U14.
Tips
- Rehearse the overlap with different players so opponents cannot identify it.
- Place a reference cone where the 9 must start to automate the late arrival.
