1v1 with attacker's choice: shoot or dribble in a 10x10 square

1v1 with attacker's choice: shoot or dribble in a 10x10 square

Objective

Read the attacker's first touch to anticipate a shot or a dribble, narrow the angle quickly and resolve the 1v1 while staying on the feet as long as possible.

Organisation

10x10 m square marked with cones. The keeper defends a two-yard goal in the middle of one side. One starting cone opposite the centre of the goal (central approaches) and another in a corner (wide approaches). Attackers wait in a line with a ball each; the keeper starts every repetition.

Development

  1. 1The keeper rolls the ball out to the attacker at the starting cone; the live ball is the trigger.
  2. 2The attacker controls and decides with the first touch: a big touch means dribbling round the keeper, a short oriented touch means an early shot.
  3. 3The keeper advances while the ball travels to narrow the angle and stops low, hands low and in front, as soon as the attacker controls.
  4. 4If the attacker dribbles, the keeper stays on his feet, tracks him and uses a feint to dive to force a long touch; if he shoots, the keeper blocks or clears.
  5. 5Alternate five-minute blocks: central approaches and approaches from the wide cone (switching sides) for 20 minutes.
  6. 6On wide approaches the keeper uses the touchline as an ally and shows the attacker outside.

Coaching points4

  • The attacker's first touch gives the information: big touch, go and win the ball; short touch, stop and get ready for the shot.
  • Advance to narrow while the ball travels and stay low and balanced when the attacker has control.
  • Stay on the feet and committed until the ball is won; the feint to dive is there to provoke the mistake.
  • From the side, make play predictable: close the inside and push the attacker towards the touchline.

Common mistakes3

  • Rushing out without stopping and being beaten with a single touch.
  • Staying on the goal line and giving away the shooting angle.
  • Going to ground before the attacker shows his intention.

Variations3

  • Replace the small goal with two cones 2 m apart so it works in any space.
  • The coach secretly tells the attacker which option to execute to control the ratio of shots and dribbles.
  • Add a passive second attacker who receives a pass whenever the keeper hesitates.

Progressions2

  • Full-size goal in the penalty area with the start from the edge of the box to transfer the decision to real distances.
  • 3v1 in the same square with no goal: the keeper must win the ball or force it out of the square.

Regressions2

  • The attacker announces before receiving whether he will shoot or dribble.
  • Reduce the square to 8x8 m and lower the approach speed.

Tips

  • Rotate the attacker every three repetitions so the keeper faces different styles.
  • Count smothers and goals so the keeper has a reference for progress.
