High claim with passive opposition
Aerial balls served by the coach into the six-yard box with two attackers occupying the space passively; the keeper comes out, jumps and catches at the highest point.
El entrenador cuelga el balón a la zona; el portero grita 'mía' y arranca.
Objective
Improve reading of the aerial trajectory, jump timing and the security of the high catch with players in the catching zone.
Organisation
Quarter pitch with a goal. Coach with balls on the flank, 25 m from goal, serving by hand or volley. Two passive attackers occupy the six-yard box without jumping or actively obstructing. Catching zone marked with cones between 3 and 8 m from the goal line. Two keepers alternate every 6 balls.
Development
- 1The keeper starts in the set position 2 m off the goal line, facing the ball with the attackers located.
- 2The coach sends an aerial ball into the marked zone, high and with enough flight time.
- 3The keeper shouts 'keeper', drives forward with quick steps and adjusts the last stride to take off on one leg, raising the opposite knee for protection.
- 4The ball is caught at the highest point, hands in a W, arms slightly bent and in front of the head.
- 5The keeper lands on both feet, protects the ball against the chest and returns to position without losing sight of the attackers.
- 6The attackers change position on every ball; 3-4 sets of 6 balls per keeper.
Coaching points4
- Decide early and call it loudly: a half-hearted claim is the worst option.
- Time the jump to take the ball at the highest point with the arms in front of the head.
- Raise the knee on take-off to protect the body without fouling the opponent.
- Keep the eyes on the ball until it is in the hands, even with contact.
Common mistakes3
- Coming late and having to catch the ball below head height.
- Jumping off both feet, losing height and stability.
- Stopping for fear of contact and leaving the ball in the danger zone.
Variations3
- The attackers try to head the ball gently, increasing the decision demand.
- Serve from the opposite flank to work body orientation to the other side.
- Replace the catch with a two-fisted punch when the ball arrives with a crowd nearby.
Progressions2
- Move from passive to semi-active opposition: attackers may jump but not push.
- Add a defender who crosses the keeper's path before the jump.
Regressions2
- No opposition and hand serves from 10-12 m to settle the jumping technique.
- Reduce the catching zone to the 5 m closest to the goal.
Tips
- Remind the keeper that the decision is made in the first fraction of the ball's flight.
- Vary the height and speed of the serves so the claim never becomes automatic.
