Rangnick's 8-second game: regain in 8 s, shoot within 10 s
7v7 game with two stopwatches on the touchline: after every loss the team has 8 seconds to win the ball back and, once it has, 10 seconds to get a shot on target. The game Rangnick used to turn transition into an instinct.
El 4 pierde el balón ante el 3 azul; el ayudante inicia la cuenta atrás de 8 segundos.
Objective
Internalise the counter-pressing window (the 8 seconds in which the opponent is disorganised) and the finishing window after a regain (the 10 seconds with the highest scoring probability), playing vertically and forward as soon as the ball is won.
Organisation
60x40 m pitch with two full-size goals and keepers. Two teams of seven in bibs. An assistant on the touchline with two countdown stopwatches: one set to 8 seconds (maximum time to regain) and one to 10 seconds (maximum time to get a shot on target). If possible, an audible countdown the players can hear.
Development
- 1Normal game with offside. On every turnover the assistant starts the 8-second countdown out loud: the team that lost the ball must win it back before it reaches zero.
- 2If it fails to regain within 8 seconds the opponents earn a point and play continues.
- 3As soon as a team regains, the 10-second count starts: it must get a shot on target before it ends; if it does it earns a point (a goal is worth three).
- 4If 10 seconds pass without a shot, the ball goes to the opponents from where it is.
- 5Four-minute sets with one minute of recovery; most points wins. Swap the assistant's roles so each team always hears its own clock.
Coaching points4
- After losing the ball the three nearest players jump on it from different angles: press as a group, not in a line.
- The rest of the team squeezes towards the ball to cut the pass that breaks the press.
- On regaining, the first pass goes forward or diagonally into space: never backwards unless there is no option.
- Hunt the shot with 10 seconds in mind: if there is a shot from 20 m, take it.
Common mistakes3
- One player counter-pressing alone while the others retreat: the opponent escapes on the free side.
- Regaining and securing with a back pass to the keeper: the 10-second window burns away.
- Players giving up the press after 5 seconds; the countdown is a limit, not a target.
Variations3
- 8v8 or 9v9 on 70x45 m to involve more players in the structure.
- The regain point only counts if the ball is won in the opponent's half.
- A goal after a regain inside 5 seconds counts double.
Progressions2
- Reduce the counts to 6 and 8 seconds with elite players.
- Add the rule that after the shot the team must win the ball back from the opposing keeper within another 8 seconds.
Regressions2
- Counts of 10 and 15 seconds for younger age groups.
- No offside and an attacking joker to make the shot easier.
Tips
- Call the countdown out loud or use a speaker: Rangnick wanted the players to hear the seconds tick away.
- Keep each set's points on a visible board; the competition sustains the intensity.
