Counter-Pressing 4v4 Small-Sided Game
4v4 small-sided game in 40x30 m with mini goals in which the team that loses the ball has six seconds to win it back. Trains immediate reaction and coordinated pressing.
El pase del 1 hacia el 2 es interceptado por el defensor azul.
Objective
Automate the collective reaction after losing the ball: immediate pressure from the nearest player, the others closing passing lines, and regaining possession high up the pitch.
Organisation
40x30 m pitch marked with cones and a mini goal on each end line. Two teams of four in bibs; spare balls next to each goal. The coach stands on the touchline with a stopwatch to enforce the six-second rule.
Development
- 1Play a normal 4v4 with each team attacking the opposite mini goal.
- 2When a team loses the ball, it has six seconds to win it back; if it does so within that time, the next goal it scores counts double.
- 3The player nearest the ball presses the ball carrier immediately, steering him towards the touchline; the other three close the nearest passing lines.
- 4If the team that regains the ball scores before the opponent reorganises, the score doubles again.
- 5If the team that regained possession cannot progress, it keeps the ball until it finds a route to goal. Sets of 3 minutes, with teams swapping and 90 seconds of rest.
Coaching points4
- The first player presses within two seconds of the loss, without waiting for teammates.
- Press on a curve to block the long pass and steer the ball carrier towards the touchline.
- Teammates shorten distances towards the ball and close the nearest support option.
- After regaining the ball, first look towards goal: try to score before the opponent reorganises.
Common mistakes3
- Reacting late or complaining about the loss instead of pressing.
- Only one player pressing while the rest drop off and leave the easy pass on.
- Winning the ball back and losing it again immediately through rushing.
Variations3
- Add an attacking joker who always plays with the team in possession to force more turnovers.
- Play with two mini goals per team to force the press to be steered to one side.
- Only count goals scored after a regain in the opponent's half.
Progressions2
- Reduce the recovery time to four seconds.
- Expand to 5v5 in 45x35 m to work the press over greater distances.
Regressions2
- Extend the time to eight seconds and play 4v3 in favour of the pressing team.
- Freeze play after each loss to explain the first reaction, then restart.
Tips
- Use a whistle from the coach at six seconds so the team knows when the press has failed.
- Praise every quick regain out loud to reinforce the behaviour.
