Objective

Activate with the ball from minute one: crisp passing, constant support and quick reactions after losing the ball, with a progressive physical load.

Organisation

Groups of five in an 8x8 m square marked with four cones. Four possession players, one per side, and one presser in a bib in the middle. One ball per group plus a spare.

Development

  1. 1The four possession players circulate the ball with free touches while the presser hunts.
  2. 2When the presser touches the ball or it leaves the square, the player responsible goes into the middle and the presser takes their side.
  3. 3After two minutes, two-touch limit; after four, one touch whenever possible.
  4. 4Every five consecutive passes earns the possession players a point; the score is called out at every change.
  5. 5Reverse the direction of circulation on the coach's call to work both feet.

Coaching points4

  • Receive with the body open to the next pass, not facing the ball.
  • Players off the ball slide along their side to offer a clean passing line.
  • Passes along the ground and with pace, never lofted.
  • The presser arcs the run to close one option and force the other.

Common mistakes3

  • Standing still in the corner and receiving with no angle.
  • Soft passes that let the presser arrive.
  • The presser runs straight at the ball and is played around easily.

Variations3

  • Two pressers with six possession players.
  • The player who loses the ball does three jumps before going in.
  • Points only count for one-touch passes.

Progressions2

  • Shrink the square to 6x6 m.
  • Alternate a short pass and a long pass through the middle.

Regressions2

  • Enlarge to 10x10 m with free touches.
  • Add a neutral player in the middle.

Tips

  • Keep groups small so every player gets plenty of touches.
  • It is a warm-up: rising intensity, no maximal sprints at the start.
