King of the ring: knockout with ball protection
Everyone with a ball inside a 20x20 m square: keep your own ball under control while trying to kick everyone else's out of the ring. Lose your ball and you are out; the last player standing is king of the ring.
Step 1Conducción y cabeza arriba
1 / 3
Todos conducen dentro del ring vigilando dónde están los rivales.
Objective
Shield the ball with the body, turn away from pressure and at the same time keep the head up to decide who to attack.
Organisation
20x20 m square marked with four cones (30x30 for more than twelve players). One ball per player. Eliminated players collect their ball and dribble around the outside until the next round.
Development
- 1All players dribble freely inside the square.
- 2On “let battle commence!”, every player tries to kick an opponent's ball out of the ring while keeping their own under control.
- 3Anyone whose ball leaves the ring is out: they collect it and dribble around the outside (so the coach can see who is out) without touching anyone else's ball.
- 4No slide tackles or pushing: technical knockout and straight elimination.
- 5When two or three players remain, the coach announces a final 20 seconds and shrinks the square to force decisions.
- 6The last player is king of the ring. Rounds of 2-3 minutes; play 3-4 rounds.
Coaching points4
- Head up: know where opponents are before they arrive.
- Body between the ball and the opponent; turn your back when attacked and exit with the outside of the foot.
- Turns and drag-backs (Cruyff, drag-back, hook) to escape pressure.
- Attack an opponent's ball only when your own is under control.
Common mistakes3
- Running to attack and leaving your own ball loose behind you.
- Hiding in a corner and not taking part.
- Kicking the opponent instead of the ball.
Variations3
- QuickStartSoccer round 2: no balls, a bib tucked into the shorts; steal the others' bibs.
- Round 3: ball and bib together, defend both.
- Teams: two colours, the team with more balls still inside at the end wins.
Progressions2
- Shrink the square every round.
- Tag-team pairs: one plays while the partner rests outside; swap with a high five.
Regressions2
- Eliminated players re-enter after ten toe taps outside the ring.
- Opponents' balls may only be kicked out with the weak foot.
Tips
- Short, fun cues: “ball close”, “head up”.
- Insist that eliminated players keep dribbling outside: nobody stands still.
