Objective

Exploit the 2v1 overload with quick decisions (pass or dribble, wall pass, run) and finish before defensive help arrives.

Organisation

Pitch of 30x20 yards (minimum) to 40x25 (maximum) with a goal and a goalkeeper at each end. Two teams of four; each team defends one goal and attacks the other. Players not on the pitch wait beside their own goal with balls.

Development

  1. 1One team A player is on the pitch defending and one team B player is also on, next to his own goal.
  2. 2A B team-mate dribbles on from his end line and creates a 2v1 against the A defender.
  3. 3The two B players attack and finish as quickly as possible; the ball is live until a goal, a save or the ball leaves the pitch.
  4. 4As soon as the play ends, one of the two B players leaves the pitch (the one who finished) and a new A player dribbles on with a fresh ball: now it is A's 2v1 against the B player who stayed.
  5. 5The sequence repeats without pause for a fixed time (4-5 minutes) with a live score.
  6. 6Keepers serve the ball to the incoming team if the attacker does not dribble it on.

Coaching points4

  • The ball carrier drives straight at the defender to commit him and decides late: if the defender steps out, pass; if he waits, dribble and shoot.
  • The partner uses the full width and offers a clear passing line, slightly behind the ball to stay onside.
  • Positive first touch towards goal; no backwards controls.
  • Low shot across the keeper as soon as the angle opens: the 2v1 advantage lasts a few seconds.

Common mistakes3

  • The incoming player passes too early and hands the advantage to the defender.
  • Both attackers on the same line with no passing angle.
  • The player who should leave stays on and it becomes 3v1.

Variations3

  • The incoming player must enter from a keeper's pass instead of dribbling on.
  • A goal after a wall pass counts double.
  • Both attackers stay on and a defender enters: continuous 2v2.

Progressions2

  • A second defender enters after three seconds to press the 2v1.
  • Enlarge the pitch to 40x25 yards and demand a finish within 8 seconds.

Regressions2

  • Passive defender for the first rounds.
  • No keepers, mini-goals and a shorter pitch.

Tips

  • Whistle or the coach's voice to signal the next player's entry and avoid confusion.
  • Plenty of balls at each end so nobody waits.
