2v2 defending with pressure and cover
2v2 game in a 20x20 m square with mini goals where the defending pair learns the roles of first defender (pressure) and second defender (cover), and how to swap them with every pass.
El 1 pasa al 2. El defensor 2 presiona al poseedor y el 1 se coloca en cobertura, en ángulo y del lado de la portería.
Objective
Train the defending pair to work together: the first defender closes the ball carrier down and shows him towards the cover, while the second defender sits at an angle, goal-side, ready to step in if his partner is beaten.
Organisation
20x20 m square with a mini goal in the middle of each short side. Groups of four: two attackers with a ball and two defenders. Waiting pairs stand outside the square next to their goal with spare balls. Rotate after a fixed time; the defending pair that concedes fewest goals wins.
Development
- 1The attackers start from their end line and try to score in the far mini goal.
- 2The defender nearest the ball closes down with controlled approach speed and a closed angle, forcing the ball carrier to play towards his partner.
- 3The second defender takes up a covering position: at an angle, goal-side and close enough to attack the ball if the first defender is dribbled, without losing sight of the second attacker.
- 4With every pass between the attackers the roles switch: the coverer presses and the presser drops to cover.
- 5If the ball leaves the square or a goal is scored, the waiting attacking pair enters with a new ball and the defenders reset quickly.
- 6Rotate the defending pair every two minutes; the one that concedes fewest goals wins the round.
Coaching points4
- First defender's speed and angle of approach: slow down over the last metres and show one way only.
- The second defender never stands in line with the first: always diagonal and closer to goal.
- Constant communication from the coverer: 'close him', 'show him wide', 'yours'.
- Switch roles the moment the ball travels, not when it arrives.
Common mistakes3
- First defender arrives at full speed and is beaten with one touch.
- Both defenders jump at the same attacker and leave the other free.
- Cover too far away to intervene when the partner is dribbled.
Variations3
- Limit attackers to two touches to force more role changes.
- Add an attacking floater (2v2+1) to make covering harder.
- Run four squares at once and play a pairs tournament.
Progressions2
- 6v6 game in 40x25 m divided into zones with a fixed 2v2 in each zone, no leaving the zone.
- Remove the zones and play 4v4 applying the same roles.
Regressions2
- Start with passive defending to fix positions and distances.
- Attackers allowed one pass before taking the defender on, to slow the decisions down.
Tips
- Use the role change as the key freeze moment to stop and correct.
- No more than four groups per coach so the covering position can be observed.
